GARAGE RELATED QUESTIONS

Q. I want to have my garage door automated but I already have a gate opener. Can I use the remote control for the garage to control both my gate and my garage door?

A. Yes but only if the garage door opener being fitted is the same brand and series as the gate opener. For example, if you have a Merlin gate opener with a blue button remote and the garage door opener being fitted is a Merlin opener with a green button remote it will not work as they are at different frequencies, to put in other terms they cannot talk to each other as they speak different languages. What you can do, however, is fit a device called a receiver to the gate opener, which is compatible with the green remotes and basically acts as a translator so that you can use your green remotes with your Merlin blue remote system.

Q. Why does my garage door opener reverse back up instead of closing?

A. Your Garage door opener may reverse back up for a number of reasons:
1. If you have P.E.Beams (photoElectric Beams – a device normally black in colour and found mounted at bumper height in the door opening) fitted it could mean that there could have been an obstruction whilst the door was trying to close, or the P.E.Beam could be dirty so as a safety precaution the door opener has either stopped or reopened to avoid any injury or damage being caused to the object.

2. Your door may have hit something or jammed momentarily and has opened in an attempt to avoid damage.

3. The door has finished closing and has reversed back up. This suggests that the limits need adjustment or that the gears are worn or broken.

Q. Why is my manual Garage Door so heavy?

A. Garage doors are one of, if not the largest moving object in your home and can weight sometimes in excess of 200kg…surprised? Well, you might be as they don’t seem that heavy to lift as the doors are usually counterbalanced by springs. If the springs are not set up correctly, however, you may find the door very heavy to lift. Another possibility is that the springs may need readjusting as a result of some tension being lost through time or one or both of the springs may have snapped, which would be visibly noticeable. If any of these relate to you it may be a good idea to have it checked out.

Q. My automatic Garage Door won’t open or is stuck in the closed position?

A. Your automatic Garage Door could be stuck in the closed position or just won’t open for a number of reasons.
1. The counter balance spring could be broken and is overloading the system or it has lost tension and needs to be retentioned.
2. The door could be jammed somewhere or maybe the locking mechanism has accidentally become engaged somehow.
3. There could be a fault with the electronics either the control board or the remotes, try replacing batteries.

GATE RELATED QUESTIONS

Q. Can I automate my gate if it opens outwards?

A. Yes you may as long as the gate does not protrude onto council property when opening as there would be public liability issues.

Q. Can I have it so that my gate automatically closes?

A. Yes, you can I have it so that your gate automatically closes. A lot of the current gate openers, whether sliding or swing gate openers have a feature called auto close, which on most systems are able to set a timer to allow enough time for you to exit or enter the property. It is strongly advised that you fit a device called a Photo Electric Beam otherwise known as P.E. Beams if you are planning on using this operation. These beams will stop your gate from closing on your car or any object which is in line with the beams, avoiding damaged to your property, yourself or loved ones.

Q. Can I automate my swing gate if the gate swings open on an upward rise?

A. Yes, you can automate your swing gate if the swing gate opens on an upward rise, but you will be limited to the type operators that are suitable for the application. When considering the choice of opener, the added weight needs to be taken into consideration as a gate opening on an upwards rise will require more force to move than if it were the same gate on a flat.
